CERVICAL SCREENING TEST

A cervical screening test is a screening test for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

Cervical cancer is caused by persisting infection with high risk subtypes of HPV.

Currently in Australia, it is recommended that cervical screening testing be commenced at 25 years of age, and continue every 5 years to 74 years of age. More frequent screening may be recommended if abnormalities have been seen, or as part of the follow up of treatment.

The current screening program identifies a few groups of people who tend to be under-screened, including lesbian and bisexual women, trans people with a cervix, older people, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

For more information visit National Cervical Screening Program.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING

One in 12 women in Australia will develop breast cancer at some stage in their life.
