The Northside Clinic GPs can organise referrals to surgeons specialising in top surgery (i.e. chest reconstruction / mastectomy), sex reassignment / affirmation surgery (genital), facial feminisation, laryngeal shaves, hysterectomy, breast augmentation.
A mental health review is required prior to surgery on reproductive organs. Generally one psychiatry report is required for top surgery, and 2 reports for lower surgery.
Surgery without hormone therapy is becoming more common, for example many people who have top surgery do not request testosterone therapy.
Some people travel overseas for surgery, particularly as some operations (e.g. phalloplasty and metoidioplasty – becoming available interstate) are very difficult to access in Australia.
